Warrior of the Week: Senior Airman Published Nov. 20, 2006 By Public Affairs Public Affairs Vance Air Force Base, Okla. -- Senior Airman Kyle Hellstrom, 71st Communications Squadron airfield systems journeyman, is "my 'go to guy' for preventative maintenance, responsible for the completion of more than 67 scheduled maintenance tasks," said Tech. Sgt. Troy Harris, assistant NCO in charge, airfield systems maintenance. "During a three-week period in August, our work center manning was reduced by 50 percent because of mission training requirements. Airman Hellstrom single-handedly ensured wing flight training continued without loss of critical air traffic control and landing systems equipment," Sergeant Harris said. A native of Omaha, Neb., Airman Hellstrom has been assigned to Vance Air Force Base, his first permanent duty station, just a month shy of two years. "I joined the Air Force because of the job opportunities it offered, while still allowing me to continue my education," the 24-year-old bachelor said. Taking advantage of those continuing education programs, Airman Hellstrom is just one course away from completing his Community College of the Air Force degree. He earned associate degrees in computer science and applied sciences from Metropolitan Community College in Omaha before entering the Air Force in January 2004. His goal is to complete a bachelor's degree in technical management by the time he completes his enlistment. When not working or hitting the books, Airman Hellstrom enjoys playing golf, driving his car and watching Nebraska Cornhusker football games. He also enjoys bowling and is a member of his squadron's intramural bowling team.
