Vance Defenders celebrate National Police Week Published May 15, 2013 VANCE AIR FORCE BASE, Okla. -- In celebration of the 50th Anniversary of National Police Week the 71st Security Forces Squadron Defenders at Vance Air Force Base hosted events May 13-17 to recognize the service and sacrifice of the men and women working in law enforcement. Monday, May 13, the Air Force security forces joined with the Enid Police Department for a formation run in the local area. On Tuesday, 71st SFS members joined with civilian law enforcement at the Enid Firing Range for shooting competition. Wednesday, students at the Eisenhower Elementary School on base were treated to tours and hands-on-demonstrations of law enforcement equipment on display near Building 200. Two of the 71st SFS members, Master Sgt. Richard Dodson and Senior Airman Tynisia Hains, explained some of the tools they use in their job to the children. Thursday the squadron hosted their first Chisholm Trail Defender Challenge, a team obstacle course open to all base personnel. The week-long celebration wraps up with a retreat ceremony recognizing law enforcement officers killed in action. The ceremony is scheduled for 4 p.m., Friday, at the base flagpole. National Police Week was established by a joint resolution of Congress in 1962 and is designated to recognize the service and sacrifice of the men and women working in law enforcement throughout the United States.
