Ortega-Flores named April Airman of the Month Published May 2, 2012 By Airman 1st Class Frank Casciotta 71st Flying Training Wing Public Affairs VANCE AIR FORCE BASE, Okla. -- Airman 1st Class Yenia Ortega-Flores, an operations manager with the 71st Communication Squadron, received the 71st Flying Training Wing Airman of the Month award for April. Each month Airmen are selected to represent their squadron as Airman of the Month. They face a board consisting of the previous month's Airman of the Month, a junior NCO and a senior NCO. The candidates are judged on military bearing, dress and appearance, while being questioned on current events and military policy. "I know she didn't want to go up to the board because she gets nervous, but I told her to go do her best," said Tech. Sgt. Danyel Ford, NCO in charge of knowledge operations with the 71st CS. "She is an outstanding Airman and I couldn't ask for anyone better." This was Ortega-Flores's third time going before the board and her second time being recognized as Airman of the Month. "I don't like being the center of attention at events, but I didn't want to disappoint my supervisor or my squadron," said Ortega-Flores. "I'm just doing my job." That job consists of record keeping for the 71st CS and managing SharePoint for the entire base. When she isn't working, Ortega-Flores, a California native, spends time volunteering. "I like to volunteer, but only for things I'm interested in, like tutoring at local schools and activities that impact the junior enlisted community," said Ortega-Flores. She is scheduled to complete her Victim's Advocate training with the Vance Sexual Assault Prevention & Response office in May.
