Team Vance can help local food banks through the third annual Feds Feed Families food-drive campaign running until Aug. 24.

Feds Feed Families is a federal government-wide effort to offer a helping hand to communities across the nation. The Department of Defense's goal is to collect and donate 733,800 pounds of food.

"Although there are no individual service goals, we want to make sure that Vance AFB is well represented and maybe promote a little friendly competition between the squadrons!" said 2nd Lt. Sara Hutchins, the Vance AFB coordinator for the Feds Feed Families program.

Food banks across the country are facing severe shortages of non-perishable items while children are without school nutrition programs. Federal employees nationwide are stepping up to meet this challenge by gathering 2 million pounds of food for families in need this summer.

Collection points around the base are located at the Commissary, Aerospace Physiology in Building 826, the Medical Clinic, Base Library and the flying training squadrons. More drop-off boxes will be placed soon.

Here are a few of the items local food banks are looking for:
  • Peanut butter and jelly
  • Cereal
  • Baby food
  • Canned tuna or other canned meats
  • Canned fruits and vegetables
  • Powdered milk
  • Sugar, flour, grains, brown and white rice and oatmeal
  • Hamburger Helper, macaroni and cheese, pasta and boxed meals
  • 100 percent juices of all sizes including juice boxes
  • Soups
  • Individually packed snacks, crackers, trail mix, dried fruit, granola and cereal bars, pretzels, sandwich crackers
  • Personal care items like diapers, soap, toothpaste, shampoo, etc.
  • Pet food
