Acclaimed filmmaker, writer, actress and public speaker Angela Shelton will be at the base auditorium at 10 a.m., April 9 to give a one-hour presentation as part of Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Ms. Shelton has spoken in Congress, universities, military bases, high schools, elementary schools, community centers, conferences and seminars worldwide.

Ms. Shelton is known as an informative and engaging public speaker. She has appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show, Larry King Live, 48 Hours Investigates, National Public Radio, Lifetime Television for Women and the cover of the New York Times.

Her award winning film, "Searching for Angela Shelton," put a spotlight on sexual abuse and domestic violence and began a worldwide movement of abuse survivors. Ms. Shelton's memoir, "Finding Angela Shelton," is mandatory reading in many women's studies programs.

The United States Justice Department presented Angela with a certificate of appreciation for her hard work on behalf of crime victims. She was presented with the Voice of Courage award from Darkness to Light, an organization with the goal of ending childhood sexual abuse. The mayor of Asheville, N.C., where Ms. Shelton was born, made April 29 Angela Shelton Day in honor of all abuse survivors.

Sexual assault is one of the most underreported crimes in this country and in the military. This presentation will help provide a different perspective on overcoming sexual assault and can help shed light on the various dynamics a victim encounters in the aftermath of an assault. This presentation is open to active duty, family members, Department of Defense civilians and contracting partners at Vance.
