Vance Clinic adds welcoming tone with new mural Published Sept. 30, 2009 By 2nd Lt. Christopher Carrillo 71st Flying Training Wing Public Affairs VANCE AIR FORCE BASE, Okla. -- Anyone who has visited the base clinic in the last two weeks has seen Carol Forsythe and her newest artwork, a mural full of Oklahoma and Vance Air Force Base history. The idea of placing a mural in the lobby came after the most recent renovations to the base clinic. A committee was constructed to decide on something to put in the lobby. Shane Campbell, the building manager, said the committee was looking for something that stood out and said "Oklahoma." He said he wanted people to enter the clinic and say "Hey! That's kind of cool. I would like to get treated here." In its middle stages, the mural has another week or so until completion, but it already matches Mr. Campbell's thoughts. Walking into the clinic, one can't miss the mural's giant "Oklahoma" written at the top or the signature farms and old T-37s. After the committee agreed on a mural, Malisa Mills, a contractor in the lab, Googled "Oklahoma murals" and came across some of Ms. Forsythe's work. The two communicated through email, exchanging ideas and giving feedback, eventually agreeing on the final design, currently on display in the clinic's lobby. Ms. Forsythe has worked with a broad range of mediums for companies including Paramount Studios, Columbia Pictures, Disney and the Cincinnati Opera. She has painted murals, portraits and has created sculptures. Ms. Forsythe served in the Marine Corps for three years as an illustrator; her grandfather, father and brothers all served in the military. Since serving in the military is no longer an option, Ms. Forsythe wants to support the military with her art. "I was in the service during the Vietnam era. I remember how those soldiers were treated. It was just wrong," Ms. Forsythe explained. "I really want to join the military again, but can't because of my age. I just want to do my part for my country." Ms. Forsythe primarily does commercial work, but also produces her art for the benefit of individuals too.
