Free food, music, games at Energy Conservation celebration Published Aug. 4, 2009 By Ashley M.D. Murphy 71st Force Support Squadron Marketing manager VANCE AIR FORCE BASE, Okla. -- The 71st Flying Training Wing will host an Energy Conservation celebration Aug. 19 as a reward to all Team Vance members participating in energy conservation throughout the past year. The celebration begins at 4 p.m. and will be an outdoor block party on McAffrey Avenue, between the Youth Center and the Fitness Center, with music, food, games, and give-aways - all with a "green" theme. Jeff Hume, the chief operating officer of Continental Resources, headquartered in Enid, Okla., will be the guest speaker at the celebration. Vance was in an energy conservation competition with other bases in the Air Education Training Command from July 2008 to June 2009; competing for a first-, second-, and third-place financial reward of up to $1.5 million. The results of the competition are scheduled to be released sometime in August. According to Daniel Calvert, a CSC Applied Technologies LLC, mechanical engineer on Vance, the base reduced their energy output by 12.7 percent during the year-long timeframe. "I believe our aggressive temperature standards is what had the largest impact," Mr. Calvert said. The Energy Conservation celebration is a direct result of the dedication to energy conservation displayed by all Vance military members, civilians, contractors and their families. To help make the event a success, local companies are helping sponsor the event. These companies include: Continental Resources, Oklahoma Gas and Electric, Oklahoma Natural Gas, P&K Equipment, Envirotech Engineering, Johnston Enterprises, the American Red Cross, Advance Food Company, Freddy's Frozen Custard, and WEBCO.
