Vance observes National Day of Prayer with burritos, artwork Published May 7, 2009 By Joe B. Wiles 71st Flying Training Wing Public Affairs VANCE AIR FORCE BASE, Okla. -- More than 60 Team Vance members combined breakfast burritos and prayer at the Community Chapel Activity Center Thursday morning in observance of the 58th annual National Day of Prayer, May 7. More than 100 burritos, prepared by members of Focus 5/6, cereals, fresh fruit and beverages were provided by the base chapel. Two prayer and meditation rooms were available, complete with mood music, video and candles. "Today is not just a Christian day of prayer," said Staff Sgt. Jonathan Carpenter with the base chapel. "We want to be pluralistic in our approach so we can include all faiths," he said. In the past, National Day of Prayer celebrations focused on formal prayer breakfasts with guest speakers, said Chaplin (Capt.) David Martinez. "We wanted an environment where people can come and go, get some food and take time for prayer and meditation." This is the second year the Vance chapel has taken this approach to participation in the National Day of Prayer. More than 70 people attended last year's event. This year's theme was "People, places and situations." Artwork, provided by students at the Oklahoma Bible Academy and Emmanuel Christian School in Enid, was on display. The National Day of Prayer is an annual observance held on the first Thursday of May, inviting people of all faiths to pray for the nation. It was created in 1952 by a joint resolution of the U.S. Congress, and signed into law by President Harry S. Truman. Focus 5/6 is a professional organization for Vance staff and technical sergeants.
