71st FTW announces first airman of month Published Dec. 8, 2006 By SrA Amanda Mills Public Affairs Vance Air Force Base, Okla. -- The first Vance Airman of the Month board convened Jan 30. A1C Andrew Heckathorn, 25th Flying Training Squadron, emerged above the 10 nominees who met the board. "It's a nice feeling knowing that I am the first airman of the month ever at Vance," Airman Heckathorn said. "There was a lot of great competition and many of the people there were just as deserving." Airman Heckathorn said he was excited when he learned of his nomination. "It is always great honor to compete for an award at the wing level," he said. He was also comfortable with the process because of past experience. "I had been involved in several boards in the past. The board asked questions regarding (Promotion Fitness Examination) subjects such as dress and appearance, customs and courtesies, security and a few other topics. I personally didn't find it difficult." The board panelists were CMSgt Ronald Prewitt, 71st Medical Group, MSgt Pamela Hiller, 71st Medical Operations Squadron and MSgt Thomas Tvedt, 71st Mission Support Group. "Overall the board went quite well," Chief Prewitt said. "Airman Heckathorn carried himself well and articulated his military knowledge, but overall (the board was) very impressed with the quality of all the troops. All the nominees presented themselves in a professional manner and a positive military image." Chief Prewitt added that to set airmen up for success, supervisors should take an active role in teaching and preparing them on what to expect when meeting a board. "I cannot stress enough the importance of practice, practice, practice," he said. Nominations for the February board are due Thursday. Call 6516.
