Christopher Chorney is one of four runners representing the Air Education and Training Command in the 2013 Air Force Marathon's 26.2-mile race Saturday, Sept. 21, at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio.

The second lieutenant, a student pilot in Class 14-04 here, has logged 820 miles since the first of May preparing for the marathon. And at the last moment, decided to add Enid's Great Land Run 10K as a warm up Sept. 14.

He took first place overall with 36 minutes, 29 seconds.

Second Lt. Caroline Bogdan, in Class 14-07, took first place in the 10K female category with a time of 48:23.

Marathons are not new territory for Chorney. His last one was the Boston Marathon this year with a finish time of 2 hours, 56 minutes.

The Air Force Marathon course will take runners past a number of historical locations at Wright-Patterson AFB, to include the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force and the Wright Brothers Memorial Monument.

Teams completing in the marathon this year will be scored with a combined time of all four runners. In past marathons, it was the fastest member of the team that counted.

Chorney took a couple of weeks off after the Boston Marathon in April to rest. Then it was back to training at the Bradley Fitness and Sports Center on base, both on the outdoor track and inside on the treadmills.

He also enlisted the help of 1st Lt. James Brown, an aerospace physiologist with the 71st Medical Operations Squadron.

"He came up with my training and nutrition plan to get me ready for this weekend," said Chorney.

This year marks the 17th running of the Air Force Marathon, with 15,000 runners registered.
