Preventing vehicle thefts during the summer months

  • Published
Vehicle thefts have seen a dramatic increase in Enid over the past few months, said Staff Sgt. Adam Self with the 71st Security Forces Squadron.

The Enid Police Department has taken aggressive steps to remove the criminal element behind these incidents, said Self. However, vehicle theft can occur at any time.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration trend data shows that July and August are the months with the highest vehicle theft rates.

More than 40 percent of these thefts involve vehicle owners' mistakes. The following tips are provided to help prevent vehicle thefts:
  • Always take your car key, don't leave it in or on your vehicle.
  • Always close and lock all windows and doors when you park.
  • Park in well-lit areas.
  • If available, keep your vehicle in your garage.
  • Never leave valuables in your vehicle, especially where they can be seen.
  • Never leave the area while your vehicle is running.
  • Protect your vehicle with an antitheft/immobilizer device.
Following these rules and staying aware of the threat of car theft can help prevent the loss of your vehicle this summer, said Self.
