Vance Air Force Base, Okla. -- If you are a fan of the hit television show "The Biggest Loser," it is now your turn to get healthy. The Vance Air Force Base Health and Wellness Center and fitness center are bringing the Biggest Loser competition to Vance.

Active duty, family members, Reserves, retirees and Department of Defense civilians are encouraged to participate. A team is made of a group of four people. You may still sign up if you don't have a team of four, and the HAWC will put you on a team. The participants weigh-in each month at the HAWC and the team's combined weight loss will be tracked over a three-month period. The program will begin Jan. 7 with the final weigh-in April 7. The HAWC and fitness center will also be offering different nutrition and fitness classes throughout the three-month program. Eating tips, healthy recipes and fitness information will also be available at the weigh-ins.

Kellie Jensen, Fitness Program coordinator, said the idea to bring the Biggest Loser competition to Vance was brought to her by someone who had seen the contest done at another base. Ms. Jensen said she loved the idea and started working on a plan to implement it at Vance.

"I have been waiting for the perfect time. I thought the start of the New Year would be a great time because so many people list losing weight at the top of their New Year's resolutions. This program will hopefully be a tool to accomplish that goal as well as give them the motivation to become healthier," she said.

Ms. Jensen said she is hoping to have 10 teams and lots of encouragement from the base.

"I'd really love to see this be recognized on base. I want people to be talking about it and cheering on those who are participating," Ms. Jensen said.

There will be a progress bulletin board located in the Fitness Center so people can see each team's monthly progress.

"I'm hoping this is the perfect thing to motivate someone who wants to lose weight, but is having a hard time getting started. Having teammates definitely helps keep you accountable, but also makes you feel like you aren't doing it alone," she said.

If you are interested in signing up to participle in Vance's Biggest Loser competition, please register by Jan. 4 at the HAWC. Call 213-7968 for more information.
