(The following is a response to a concern Team Vance members raised when responding to the 2013 "Caring for People" survey conducted in March.)

Concern: Why isn't there more support for familiesĀ of deployed military members?

Response: Deployments and remote tours can definitely take a toll on a family, but there are programs available to support the members and their loved ones.

The first stop for support should be the Airman & Family Readiness Center, in Building 314, to receive a pre-deployment briefing from the Readiness NCO. This briefing is not only for military members, but their families as well.

Some of the resources available at the briefing are:
  • A single/family readiness checklist
  • Coping with deployment tools
  • Financial support
  • Video and activity books for children
  • A 30-minute per week morale call pin number
  • A calling card sponsored by the Air Force Aid Society
Deployers and their families have access to the Military Family Life counselor who can assist with situational problem-solving. These licensed clinical counselors will not take notes or keep any records.

While the deployer is down range, the A&FRC, along with other base agencies, provides support to the family left behind. That support includes:
  • Monthly contact by either email or phone
  • Monthly "Hearts Apart" events for families
  • Picture pillow cases for each child
  • "Give Parents a Break" free child care sponsored by AFAS
  • PLAYPass cards for free services/activities on base
The A&FRC has many services to support the members and their families throughout all deployment phases. Families can also look to the Squadron Key Spouses, Chapel, Mental Health, and the Health and Wellness Center for more support.

The Chapel offers a monthly opportunity for a free meal for deployers' families called Singles' International Gourmet Meal Opportunity. It is held on the last Monday of every month and provides an amazing spread of food.

The A&FRC's goal is to fully support those who are deployed and their families. Team Vance members with an upcoming deployment or a remote tour should contact the A&FRC for help with any and all needs.
