Rules for safely navigating Vance traffic roundabouts Published April 24, 2013 VANCE AIR FORCE BASE, Okla. -- Roundabouts are the safest form of traffic control available. They are cheaper, more efficient and have a higher traffic capacity than normal four-way intersections. Vance has four roundabouts - three at the Hairston Gate and one at the Baker Gate. The roundabouts are circular intersections that slow traffic while allowing it to continue flowing in one direction around a central island. Because roundabouts are relatively uncommon in Oklahoma, many drivers are unfamiliar with the rules of the road when it comes to entering and exiting a roundabout. Should you use a turn signal? If so, when? Who has the right of way? When approaching a roundabout, slow down and yield to any pedestrians, cyclists or other vehicles in the roundabout. Any traffic inside the roundabout has the right of way. All too often, motorists enter the roundabout without looking first. You may enter the roundabout once there is a safe opportunity to do so. Once inside, always travel in a counterclockwise direction and do not stop except to avoid a collision. When preparing to exit the roundabout, use your right turn signal to indicate your intent to exit at the desired location. There are two key points to remember. Traffic inside the roundabout has the right of way. Use your turn signal when exiting the roundabout. It's that simple.
