More than 50 Team Vance members supported a joint Air Force Sergeants Association and Top 3 initiative to pick up trash on Gott Road leading up to the Hairston Gate April 6.

Participants included AFSA and Top 3 members as well as base senior leadership and several family members.

"For this event, the Air Force Sergeants Association was fortunate enough to team up with the Silver Talon Top 3 and together, we tackled the project," said Senior Master Sgt. Robert Woodin, the Red Carpet Chapter 990 president.

"We are so very fortunate to have such an awesome group of Airmen and families who are so dedicated to improving our base and community," said Woodin, the 71st Communications Squadron superintendent.

It was a busy month for the Red Carpet Chapter 990, the AFSA chapter for Northwest Oklahoma, who also supported the 44th Annual Area 6 Special Olympics Track and Field meet March 28 at Vance.

A small group of AFSA members provided security and traffic control for the meet, which was attended by more than 200 Olympians and their families.

"One of the great things about AFSA is the fact that we are dedicated to improving our way of life," said Woodin.

Red Carpet Chapter 990 has grown since new officers were elected for 2013. Events like the base beautification trash pickup and support for the Special Olympics have given AFSA members the opportunity to show how private organizations support local communities, bases and the lives of every service member.

Chapter 990 is scheduled to host its first Run-a-Thon May 30 at the Vance track. The goal of the event is three fold: develop leaders within the 71st Flying Training Wing, promote fitness as a way of life, and fund Chapter 990's two scholarships for Community College of the Air Force graduates.

Members wanting to participate in the Run-a-Thon can contact Staff Sgt. Verna Munoz, 213-7241, or Tech. Sgt. Jose Melendez, 213-7242.
