Open mic night starring junior enlisted Airmen Published March 28, 2013 By Senior Airman Frank Casciotta 71s Flying Training Wing Public Affairs VANCE AIR FORCE BASE, Okla. -- The Chapel staff is teaming up with the Sexual Assault Response Coordinator office to host an open mic poetry night in the Health and Wellness Center at 6 p.m., March 29, for E-4s and below. Airmen attending can either show off their poetic works or listen in while enjoying snacks, chips and dip courtesy of the Chapel staff and SARC office. "We are hoping Airmen will come out and share their poetry or give their own interpretation of a poem they find meaningful to them," said Chaplain (Maj.) Ruth Segres, the 71st Flying Training Wing deputy chaplain, and published poet. Poetry is an art form of self expression that builds off the mental and spiritual pillars of the writer. Spiritual growth is one of the four pillars of the total Comprehensive Airman Fitness concept. Poetry is one way people cultivate that pillar, said Segres. "As chaplains, our priority is the spiritual growth," said Segres. "This will provide an opportunity for our junior enlisted Airmen to get together and share thoughts and express themselves among their peers."
