The Vance Air Force Base Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program began operations Monday, Feb. 4, with free federal and state tax preparation for members of Team Vance.

The free tax service is available to active-duty members, Department of Defense civilians, reserve and National Guard members, retirees and family members.

At a minimum, customers should bring to their VITA appointment their 2011 tax returns; Social Security cards for the member, spouse, and all dependents; military ID; all W2s, 1099Rs, 1099Misc, 1099Int and 1099Div; education expenses; child care expenses; student loan interest; IRA contributions; and any other relevant documents.

In addition, customers should also bring their bank routing and account numbers for the automatic deposit of refunds or payments of taxes due. If filing a joint return, both taxpayers need to be present to sign the Form 8879, "IRS e-file Signature Authorization," before the tax return can be e-filed.

W2s and 1099Rs are available now for active duty personnel, civilians and retired personnel through myPay.
