Vance Spouse Spotlight: Melissa James Published Dec. 5, 2012 By Sarina Houston VANCE AIR FORCE BASE, Okla. -- Name: Melissa Standley James Base affiliation: My husband is the 71st Flying Training Wing commander at Vance AFB. Do you have children? I have two, a son in college and a daughter in high school. What is your educational background? I am a 1990 graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy where I played basketball. I also have a Master of Elementary Education degree from Wilmington University, Del. Where have you worked? After graduation from the Academy I was a supply/fuels officer and then a protocol officer while on active duty. Then I became a Logistics Readiness Squadron commander in the Reserves. I also taught for a while but prefer substitute teaching. It allows for more freedom to spend with my children and friends. Do you have any hobbies? I love to read! I enjoy volunteering. It provides a perfect opportunity to meet locals and make friends. Favorite thing about Enid: Its small town atmosphere. Advice to fellow military spouses: The hardest thing is maintaining a positive attitude as both a parent and military spouse. What works for me is the acronym LIVE: L -- Learn that each assignment has something to offer; just go find it I -- Investigate each town or city; find something to connect you to it V -- Volunteer; giving back is always a win-win E -- Enjoy yourself; join clubs, meet neighbors, make friends Are you a sports fan? I love the Air Force Academy. I'm a huge football and basketball fan. I played basketball there and I still hold several basketball records. One of my greatest achievements is being inducted into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame with fellow Indiana All-Stars two years ago.
