Spandex in PTUs requires color coordination Published Oct. 4, 2011 By Staff Sgt. James Bolinger 71st Flying Training Wing Public Affairs VANCE AIR FORCE BASE, Okla. -- Blue or black? White or grey? These may seem like simple questions when an Airman is deciding which color of form-fitting undergarments to purchase for use with the Air Force physical training uniform. But, if that Airman hasn't read Air Force Instruction 36-2903, she may make the wrong choice and end up with spandex that she can't wear with her uniform. According to AFI 36-2903, Airmen can wear spandex while in the PT uniform, however they must color coordinate with the uniform to be within the regulation guidelines. "The color scheme of the uniform - light up top and dark down low - is the reason different color spandex is required," said Master Sgt. Scott Swain, the 71st Operations Group first sergeant. Blue or black spandex can be worn underneath Air Force PT shorts or pants, while white or grey spandex can be worn underneath the Air Force PT shirt. These guidelines apply not only apply to the uniform while worn for official PT functions, but also while worn during individual or personal PT.
