Stop signs replace yields on Elam Road Published Sept. 14, 2011 By Zach Sproul 71st Flying Training Wing Public Affairs VANCE AIR FORCE BASE, Okla. -- Vance Air Force Base will receive a face lift of sorts when new stop signs replace the yields along Elam Road. "We are having too many close calls," said Craig Wetherington, ground safety manager here. "Individuals need to stop, look both ways and then proceed through the intersection." The decision to place new stop signs along Elam Road was in part because of the traffic volume from the flying training squadrons and maintenance units that use it daily. The work project has been approved and the replacement of yield signs with stop signs will begin when materials are available. Drivers should exercise caution when workers are present. In other safety related news, the school-zone speed-limit signs will be moved soon. They will be spaced further away from the school crosswalks in all directions to allow greater safety for students and parents to cross the street, said Wetherington. There is currently no timeline for moving the school-zone signs.
