‘Vance on the Move’ walkers take more than 29 million steps Published July 27, 2011 By Jessica Gibson 71st Flying Training Wing Public Affairs VANCE AIR FORCE BASE, Okla. -- When participants in the "Vance on the Move" walking program turned in their pedometers and tallied the number of steps they'd taken since the program started in mid-April, the results were impressive. The total number of steps taken was 29,256,269. They had walked 14,628 miles in two months! Karen Patterson was the top walker, taking 1,247,466 steps over the course of the program. Members of the 10K Per Day club walked an average of 10,000 steps per day. They were Liz Bacon, David Carn, Kevin Copenhaver, Carol Franklin, Jacqueline Hearing, Lydia Johnson, Roxanne Johnson, Kendall Kirk, Charlotte Mack, Diane Maly, Robert Morgan, Karen Patterson, Lori Shackleford and John Steurer. "This program for the first year was a great starting point, but we learned a few things," said Kellie Jensen, the Fitness Program coordinator at the Health and Wellness Center. She said the program will likely be shorter next year to help maintain excitement and enthusiasm over the course of the program. Also, the HAWC is looking into the possibility of squadron or group challenges to add another level of excitement to the program, Jensen said. If you participated in the Vance on the Move program and have not yet turned in your steps, you can still do so at the HAWC in the Fitness Center, Building 316. If you rented a pedometer from the HAWC, please return it, said Jensen. If you'd like to continue using a pedometer, notify the HAWC that you'd like to re-check it out.
