The Air Force's 98th Virtual Uniform Board released an update to AFI 36-2903, "Dress and Personal Appearance of Air Force Personnel," July 18. Part of the update affects Airmen here who use electronic devices while in uniform.

According to the updated AFI 36-2903, "While walking in uniform use of personal electronic media devices, including ear pieces, speaker phones or text messaging is limited to emergencies or when official notifications are necessary. Military customs and courtesies take precedence."

"Professionalism is the reason the policy was changed," said Master Sgt. Scott Swain, the 71st Operations Group first sergeant. "Members weren't rendering the proper customs and courtesies while on the phone; they were too focused on the call."

For Airmen worried about getting a written reprimanded for talking to their mother while walking to the BX, fear not.

Verbal counselings are the most popular way for commanders and NCOs to correct Airmen's actions, however, commanders do have a range of options including letters of counseling and letters of reprimand, said Maj. Mike Taber, the 71st Flying Training Wing acting staff judge advocate.

If you habitually 'walk and talk,' be aware that you are no longer within regs.
