Operating system on Vance computers upgrading to Windows 7 Published Jan. 26, 2011 VANCE AIR FORCE BASE, Okla. -- Improving security on the Air Force computer network is behind the upgrade to Standard Desktop Configuration 3.x on all Vance desktop and laptop computers. The upgrade will also replace Microsoft Vista with the Windows 7 operating system. A phased upgrade is already underway, with many changes installing over the network at night. According to Maj. Douglas Hayes, 71st Communications Squadron commander, the transition to SDC 3.x will be simple and straightforward for most users. "However, there may be some initial inconveniences in order to enhance our cyber-security," he said. Some older software applications may not work right initially. Some file and network sharing may be restricted and a few websites may become unavailable. "Most inconveniences will be noticeable in the first hours of use and can be resolved by our client systems technicians," said Major Hayes. While the main objective of the SDC 3.x upgrade is to improve security, it will also allow users standardization of common software applications and will promote interoperability throughout the Air Force. The upgrade will improve network security by making security settings uniform on Vance computers. This will speed up the installation of security patches and reduce computer users' ability to change configuration settings which might inadvertently expose the network to vulnerabilities. The upgrade to SDC 3.x also makes it easier for the Air Force to adopt the next generation of Windows and Microsoft Office applications when they are available. As each unit is scheduled for the upgrade, the necessary actions by users will be explained, to include how to use a "migration" shared drive on the Vance network to ensure data is backed up before the upgrade. If users experience any computer or network issues during the upgrade, they should contact the Enterprise Service Desk at 213-5701 or DSN 945-2900 for assistance. Due to security policies of the Air Force network, not all features of Windows 7 will be available to Vance users.
