Vance will participate again this year in the Air Education and Training Command energy-use-reduction competition, scheduled to run from July 2010 to June 2011. The winner, the AETC base that reduces energy use by the greatest percentage, will win $1.5 million for improvement projects.

The year-long energy use at Vance will be compared to the average of the past three years of consumption. To be in the competition, a base must reduce its energy consumption by at least 4.5 percent. The competition also measures water reduction.

"Although we won the competition two years ago, we still struggle with water conservation," said Dan Calvert, a mechanical and energy engineer with CSC Applied Technologies at Vance. "The biggest way agencies can help is by only using base-authorized devices to water the on-base grass."
