Tennis courts near the base running track are undergoing a complete renovation as the old courts are torn down and rebuilt with improved facilities.

The four new courts will boast all new amenities, said construction manager Chris Kohutek, CSC Applied Technologies Civil Engineering, including a more professional playing surface, better lighting, and a small rest area between the courts.

When Vance won the Air Education and Training Command Energy Savings competition in July 2009, the base received $1.5 million in prize money. Now, that money is being invested back into the base in the form of renovations that would otherwise not have been done, said Col. Tim Gibson, 71st Mission Support Group commander. The courts were in deteriorating condition, Colonel Gibson added, and a renovation was long overdue.

The scheduled opening date for the new courts is Sept. 22.

The courts will be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week to all players, and equipment can be signed out at the Fitness Center, Bldg. 316, during hours of operation.

The Fitness Center is open from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m., Monday-Thursday; 5 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday; and from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday and Sunday.
