Vance hosting Military Retiree Appreciation Day June 24 Published June 15, 2010 By Angel Dominguez Airman & Family Readiness Center VANCE AIR FORCE BASE, Okla. -- Vance AFB will host the Fifth Annual Military Retiree Appreciation Day from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Thursday, June 24, at the Vance Collocated Club. Honoring and meeting the needs of retirees is nothing new for Vance. But on Retiree Appreciation Day, military retirees get extra special treatment. "Vance honors retirees for a multitude of reasons," said Greg Waide, 71st Force Support Squadron, chief of Airman & Family Readiness Flight. "Their selfless devotion to duty in time of war and peace affords us the liberties we have today. This is just a small token of our appreciation." All military retirees, regardless of their branch of service, are welcome to attend this year's Retiree Appreciation Day, as are surviving spouses of retirees. The Vance Airman & Family Readiness Center has nearly 2,700 retirees on its quarterly newsletter mailing list. "We would like to see everyone from recent retirees to those who served in World War II," said Mr. Waide. "At the A&FRC we service retirees every day and I get to see firsthand how important it is to keep them informed on the changes going on in our system." Samuel D. Jarvis, director of the Department of Veterans Affairs Regional Office in Muskogee, will be the guest speaker at an 11 a.m. buffet-style luncheon, open to all attendees. In addition to honoring retirees, the event is also designed to update retirees on the benefits and services available to them. Speakers start at 9:45 a.m. and continue throughout the day, covering topics such as Survivor Assistance, Veterans Benefits, Oklahoma Veterans Long-Term Care Centers, Oklahoma City VA Medical Center and Surviving Spouse Benefits.
