Team Vance member selected for Air Force swimming team Published March 24, 2010 By 2nd Lt. Christopher L. Buzzetta 71st Flying Training Wing Public Affairs VANCE AIR FORCE BASE, Okla. -- First Lt. Andrew Bergman, an instructor pilot with the 8th Flying Training Squadron, will leave Vance AFB March 27 to represent the U.S. Air Force at the 2010 Air Headquarters Ramstein Men's and Women's Swimming Championships at Warendorf, Germany. Lieutenant Bergman is one of 18 selected for the team throughout the Air Force. He will first spend two days at a pre-championship training camp at Ramstein AB, Germany. The championship event will be held from March 30 through April 1. Swimming on an Air Force team is no new task for Lieutenant Bergman. He started swimming at the age of 6 and by the time he was in high school, he was recruited by the Air Force Academy. In fact, old teammates at the academy informed him of the competition this year. The championship is funded by the Air Force Services Agency. Members must submit an application to AFSA stating their national ranking or certified competition times. The team will compete with other countries' air forces, such as Poland, Germany and the United Kingdom. A typical schedule for Lieutenant Bergman is to work out three to five times a week consisting of mostly aerobic exercises. In addition, he may also hike, ski or mountain bike on the weekend. With only one pool open in Enid, Lieutenant Bergman attempts to swim whenever possible but admits that it's not as much as he would like to.
