Earlier this month, seven members of the 5th Flying Training Squadron were recognized for their excellent performance. Not only did many members of the Air Force Reserve Unit receive awards, but they also garnered praise from their commander, Lt. Col. Paul Tom.

"These awards represent the outstanding work of our reserve and civilian personnel as recognized beyond the squadron level awards program. Maj. Brent Drown, Lt. Col. Phil Marshall and Lt. Col. Bruce Shelton swept the annual awards from among approximately 450 instructor pilots in the 340th Flying Training Group," said Colonel Tom. "Majs. Monica Allori, Doug Stouffer and Brent Drown represent the superb Total Force Initiative program at Vance by garnering awards directly from our host units."

Colonel Tom also said, "Debbie Read was recognized by the 71st Flying Training Wing and Operations Group for maintaining outstanding administrative effectiveness that directly impacts our ability to seamlessly integrate into the Wing mission."

Individuals from the 5th FTS earned the following awards:

AFRC Resource Advisor of the Year -- Senior Master Sgt. Wayne Andersen
340th FTG IP of the Year -- Maj. Brent Drown
340th FTG Flight Leadership of the Year -- Lt. Col. Phil Marshall
340th FTG Citizen Airman of the Year -- Lt. Col. Bruce Shelton

The 5th FTS traces its origins back to World War II, when its pilots flew combat missions throughout Europe and the Mediterranean. The unit is part of the 340th FTG, headquartered at Randolph AFB, Texas. The 340th FTG administers and executes the Air Education and Training Command and AFRC Associate Instructor Pilot program, which provides Active Guard Reserve and traditional reserve IPs to augment the cadre of active duty pilots conducting pilot training.
