Vance volunteers offer free income tax preparation

VANCE AIR FORCE BASE, Okla --  The Vance AFB Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program begins operations Tuesday, Jan. 19, offering free federal and state income tax preparation for Team Vance members.

The free tax service is available for active-duty military, Department of Defense civilians, reserve and National Guard members, retirees and family members.

Customers, at a minimum, should bring the following to their VITA appointment: 2008 tax return; Social Security cards for the member, spouse, and all family members; military I.D.; all W-2s, 1099Rs, 1099Misc, 1099Int, and 1099Div; education expenses; child care expenses; student loan interest; individual retirement account contributions and any other relevant documents.

In addition, customers should also bring their bank routing and account numbers for the automatic deposit of refunds or payments of taxes due. If filing a joint return, both taxpayers need to be present to sign Form 8879s before the tax return can be e-filed.

Both civil service and retired military can obtain W2s and 1099Rs through myPay now. Active duty military W2s will be available through myPay on Jan. 20.
