Comedian Bernie McGrenahan of the enterprise "Comedy is the Cure" presented two programs on the dangers of substance abuse to several hundred Vance Airmen Sept. 29 at the Base Auditorium.

The presentation, called "Happy Hour Comedy," was hosted by the base Sexual Assault Response and Prevention Office to appeal to younger Airmen with statistically greater potential to abuse alcohol.

"We've had several presentations this year which use comedy to deliver important messages about safety and sexual assault prevention," explained Sheryl McMullen, the base Sexual Assault Response coordinator.

Mr. McGrenahan's presentation draws on his own experience from substance abuse. He talked about arrests, jail time, financial, academic and relationship issues.

"The comedian's message of respect, making responsible choices and being good Wingmen was certainly on target," said Ms. McMullen.

"He blended comedy and his own real example beautifully to connect with the audience. We were very lucky to have him here," she said.

"Bernie used a very different approach to reach the Airmen. Instead of the usual PowerPoint presentations, he used humor to draw in and gain the trust of the crowd," said Savannah Lohn, the Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Program assistant.

"He then used his own life experiences to illustrate the dangers of alcohol abuse. Bernie's message was inspirational and really got the point across to all the Airmen in the audience." Ms. Lohn said.
