Rivalry keeps father, daughter running Published Sept. 23, 2009 By 1st Lt. Agneta Murnan 71st Flying Training Wing Public Affairs VANCE AIR FORCE BASE, Okla. -- A returning pair of competitors, with a Team Vance tie, ran the U.S. Air Force half-marathon this year: Tori Jones of the 71st Medical Group and her father, Lt. Col. Jeffery Jones, a former 71st Medical Support Squadron commander here, who is currently stationed at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio, where the Air Force Marathon takes place. "Well, I got a random call from my Dad asking what size shirt I wore and whether I would prefer to run the half or the full marathon," said Ms. Jones. "We laughed about it until I realized he was being serious. "My Dad -- being the competitive person he is -- was up for a rematch. At the end of the race last year, after my Dad slowed down his pace so we could run it together, I sprinted out in front of him at the very end and beat him by seconds," Ms. Jones said. That left her father the butt of jokes for the next year. "So this year he wanted to make sure he beat me," she said. "He registered us both for the half. In the end Dad earned back his pride and beat me by 6 seconds. Our final time wasn't as good as last year because neither of us trained properly but the experience was still fun. "It's something that Dad and I have shared and made good memories from. Guess we may have to actually train for next year, for the best two out of three," Ms. Jones said.
