Team Vance celebrates Patriot Day, Sept. 11 Published Sept. 2, 2009 VANCE AIR FORCE BASE, Okla. -- Team Vance will celebrate Patriot Day, Sept. 11, with a ceremony near the base flag pole, a fly over by Vance aircraft and a 1.5-mile run. Patriot Day was signed into law in 2001 as a day to remember those who lost their lives in the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attack on the United States. The ceremony will begin at 7:30 a.m. near the flag pole on Brown Parkway between Bldg. 500 and the Vance Collocated Club. The morning's ceremony will include a moment of silence, a reading of the names of all Team Vance members currently deployed, a flyover by 71st Flying Training Wing aircraft and a 1.5-mile competitive run followed by pushups and sit-ups. All Team Vance active duty, government civilians, contractors and family members are invited to attend the ceremony. The competitive 1.5-mile run is scheduled immediately following the ceremony. Military members should wear the Air Force physical training uniform and civilians wishing to participate should wear appropriate athletic clothing. Patriot Day is observed to remember the victims of two hijacked civilian aircraft that crashed into the towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, a third that crashed into the Pentagon, and a fourth that crashed in southwestern Pennsylvania after passengers tried to regain control from the hijackers.
