The Health and Wellness Center and Fitnes Center are holding Vance's own version of the Biggest Loser competition, starting Jan. 12.

Sponsored through Vance Services and inspired by the popular NBC reality television series, Vance's 2009 Biggest Loser competition will have teams of four competing over the next three months to lose the most weight. Those who do not already have a team organized are still encouraged to sign up, and the HAWC will provide team placement.

"We chose to do teams instead of just an individual program because it builds camaraderie and helps with motivation," said Kellie Jensen, fitness program manager at the HAWC. "It's easier to fall off the wagon with fitness when it's just you. This way, you're accountable to team members."

There are several differences from the series, however. For example, participants in the Vance competition do not need to be overweight at the start--anyone who wishes to participate is welcome.

"What we're trying to do is advance a healthier lifestyle--get people to eat better and exercise. We really want them to kick off the New Year right," said Brian Mittelstet, branch manager of community services at the Fitness Center.

This is the second year that the HAWC has held Vance's Biggest Loser competition. Team members will be weighed in once a month until April 10, when the competition ends. In order to help teams along, the HAWC will offer fitness and nutrition classes each month of the competition. However, it is up to the contestants to decide whether or not to attend these classes, as well as how much or how little of a nutrition plan to adhere to, and how much of a workout plan they follow.

The classes include a Healthy Living program offered once a week, a monthly Fitness Center orientation, and healthy cooking classes and commissary tours. Individual fitness and nutrition counseling will also be available by appointment.

The Reveal Ceremony, when the biggest individual and team losers are announced, will be held on April 17. Prizes ranging from personal training sessions to gift certificates will be given to the first, second and third place teams who lost the most in February and March. Grand prizes, including spa packages for four, will be given to the first, second and third place teams for overall weight loss. There will also be individual grand prizes for the first, second and third place male and female participants.

Even though not everyone can win the grand prize, those at the HAWC feel that everyone who competes will walk away feeling rewarded for their efforts.

"This really is a great time to start thinking about your health, whether you're just looking to tone up or really want to lose some pounds," Ms. Jensen explained. "If this can jumpstart a lifestyle change for you, then we encourage you to participate!"

If you are interested in participating in Vance's Biggest Loser competition, stop by the HAWC or call 213-7698 to sign up. There will be free pedometers given to the first 100 participants who weigh in.
