The race begins in front of the Vance Air Force Base Bradley Fitness and Sports Center. 71st Flying Training Wing units compete in four categories: Men's Open (under 35), Women's Open (under 35), Men's Masters (35 and older), and Women's Masters (35 and older). According to Brian Mittelstet, fitness center supervisor, units can earn participation points for the end-of-year Commander's Trophy, awarded to the unit with the most points earned throughout the year through intramural sports. The annual event is organized through the fitness center, and attracts about 100 runners each year, said Mr. Mittelstet. 1st Lt. Chris Behrens, 25th Flying Training Squadron, won the Men's Open event in 2007, and had the overall best time of 17:19. The 5K - 3.1 mile - course takes runners around the base. Mr. Mittelstet said participants can expect a new route this year, using Fox Drive between the two base gates. Runners can sign up the morning of the event at the fitness center. Started in the mid-90s by then 71st FTW commander, Col. Buster Ellis, the idea was to get people involved in fitness while giving them the incentive of Commander's Trophy points. "A 5K run is a great way for the entire Vance community come together and celebrate fitness," said Col. Chris Nowland, 71st FTW commander. "My goal is not to host a run just for runners or active duty, but I'd like to see our Moms, Dads and kids come together and spend some quality time enjoying each other and encouraging fitness. It will be fun, come on out."
