Earning your trust, leading the wing

To all Team Vance members and the greater Enid community,

I cannot adequately express how humbled my wife, Kristan, my children, Nicholas, Natalie and Isabella, and I are to join this community as I assume command of the 71st Flying Training Wing. I certainly appreciate the terrific efforts and guidance of Rich and Mary Klumpp in leading Vance to outstanding mission accomplishment.

We look forward to getting to know you, earning your trust and leading the wing in producing the pilots and providing the trained and ready Airmen this nation needs to fight the Global War on Terrorism while we simultaneously balance mission and family in our wing.

In 1971, UCLA basketball coach, John Wooden, who led the team to win 10 NCAA championships, wrote a note to his team at the beginning of another championship season. I've paraphrased his words and added a few of my own. Just like the 1971 UCLA Bruins, our wing faces new challenges in the year ahead.

I ask each of you to make every effort to develop to the best of your ability, follow the proper rules of conduct and activity most conducive to good physical, mental and spiritual condition, subordinate individual acclaim for the welfare of the wing and permit no personality clashes or differences of opinion with teammates or supervisors to interfere with your mission.

If we all do this, it will be a very rewarding year. We look forward to the adventure.
