Excess baggage policy changes for PCS travel Published July 9, 2008 By 71st Force Support Squadron VANCE AIR FORCE BASE, Okla. -- Due to commercial airline checked-baggage policy changes, military members and their families making a permanent change of station move on official orders are authorized baggage not to exceed two pieces at 70 pounds each. Any excess baggage requests, in addition to the two pieces authorized, must be approved by the losing or gaining military personnel commander, with recommendation from the unit commander. Excess baggage requests should be based on supplies and equipment necessary to accomplish the mission for the military member only. Additional approval is not required for excess baggage when it is pre-defined on the military member's PCS orders as a personnel processing code. A standard statement will now be placed on the PCS orders remarks section for the Air Force standard baggage authorization. Any orders published on or after June 1 may be amended citing excess baggage as a standard authorization. Military members should have a copy of their PCS orders available for airline personnel and should be financially prepared to pay any fees associated with baggage. If the member is required to pay baggage fees and has the authorized baggage statement on their PCS orders, they should obtain a receipt and file for the fees on their official travel voucher. For information on PCS orders, call 213-7537, 7502, 7448 or 7748. For information on financial reimbursement, call 213-7192 or 7498.
