Interactive self-defense class comes to Vance Friday Published June 5, 2008 By Linda Pallitto SARC VANCE AIR FORCE BASE, Okla. -- Friday, June 6, at 11:30 a.m., a self-defense class will be presented at the fitness center aerobics room. This interactive self-defense class, taught by Lt. Col. Shihan Giffor, offers the opportunity to increase awareness of one's surroundings and the ability to handle potentially difficult situations. The class stresses the idea of risk reduction and offers many ways to accomplish it. Risk reduction is a wide variety of personal safety methods aimed at reducing the risk of being a crime victim. Risk reduction can be viewed much like putting on a seatbelt when you get in your car -- it won't guarantee you'll survive or be uninjured, but it increases your odds of a positive outcome. In an interpersonal relationship, other risk reduction strategies include: Communicating your own boundaries and enhancing assertiveness skills by articulating your opinions in everyday situations. Never allow someone to use guilt or pressure to try and force actions against your will. Always trust your instincts. If you feel pressured, nervous or unsafe, confront the person or get out of the situation immediately. Be aware and remember that alcohol and other drugs compromise your (and others') ability to make responsible decisions. Be cautious about giving out your contact and location information to someone you don't know or trust. Confront negative situations including sexist or racist jokes. It may feel difficult, but it is an important part of making the community a better place for everyone. All of these ideas are included in the self-defense class. Strengthen your confidence and willpower to reduce risk of harmful situations. Street clothes are acceptable. Everyone is invited to attend and learn methods for increasing their personal safety. Call the Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Office to reserve a spot in the class, 213-5598. Walk-ins are welcome.
