SFS, Enid police celebrate National Police Week Published May 20, 2008 By Chief Master Sgt. Timothy Rogers 71st Security Forces Squadron VANCE AIR FORCE BASE, Okla. -- The 71st Security Forces Squadron partnered with the Enid Police Department May 11-17 for National Police Week to illustrate their role in protecting and serving citizens, while honoring federal, state and municipal officers who have died or were disabled in the line of duty. Security forces held several events including a weapons display, reveille ceremony, weapons demonstration and an Air Force Security Police Association visit. Security forces members also hosted a 'Cops 4 Kids Day' at the base park for more than 50 Eisenhower Elementary School students. The event also included a K-9 demonstration and numerous displays by the Vance Fire Department and security forces. Civilian law enforcement officers and military security forces put their lives on the line everyday to protect American citizens around the world, said Tech Sgt. Timothy Coleman, 71st SFS and National Police Week coordinator. "We should always remember and honor the fallen law enforcement and security forces members who made the ultimate sacrifice for the safety of citizens," Sergeant Coleman said. "It's our duty as cops to remain focused on the mission to ensure people and property remain safe." 71st SFS concluded National Police Week activities with a retreat ceremony May 16 at the base flag pole. The ceremony was attended by Col. Richard A. Klump Jr., 71st Flying Training Wing commander, and Col. Jennifer Graham, 71st Mission Support Group commander, along with local police agencies from the surrounding area. "National Police Week is one week of the year where the general public should take a minute to recognize what law enforcement does," Sergeant Coleman said. "Countless Americans live peacefully today as a direct result of police officers' actions." National Police Week was signed into public law by President John F. Kennedy in 1962, "in recognition of the service given by the men and women who, night and day, stand guard in our midst to protect us through enforcement of our laws."
