Playing golf at Vance Air Force Base doesn't require a good swing, just a good throw. That's because the new disc golf course here makes having fun a breeze.

Disc (Frisbee) golf is good, old-fashioned fun, said Master Sgt. Joe Lawley, 71st Operations Group first sergeant.

"Playing this game provides physical training in five fitness areas: muscle strength, flexibility, aerobic fitness, endurance and mental challenge," said the master sergeant from Mount Olive, Ala. "It can be played with minimal equipment and cost - about $8 per disc, instead of hundreds of dollars for golf clubs, shoes and balls."

Playing disc golf is fun, and the game doesn't cost anything to play.

"People usually pay up to $200 for greens fee at a golf course, while disc golf is free," Sergeant Lawley said. "An 18-hole disc golf round takes one hour compared to four or five hours to play traditional golf."

The game is played much the same way as regular golf. There are tee-offs, fairways, a final target and similar rules of play. Much like golf, disc golf's objective is to finish each hole in the fewest number of strokes (throws). The disc golf course has nine holes. The targets (holes) are chain baskets mounted on metal poles. The object is to land the disc in the basket in a minimum number of throws.

"This is a fun game and a great way to get outside with your whole family," Sergeant Lawley said. "I would like to thank Master Sgt. Jeremy Belair, 71st Operations Support Squadron, for installing the nine-hole course. We look forward to installing the other nine holes, as soon as a location is found."

A grand opening ceremony for the new disc golf course takes place at 1 p.m., May 7 at the base park.
