The Enlisted Masquerade - Mardi Gras 2008 event will kick off the summer with a night of dancing, food and fun for enlisted members June 7 at the Vance Collocated Club, and plans for the evening festivities are in full swing.

In February, Airman 1st Class Bethany Lawton, 71st Force Support Squadron assignments technician, wanted to create an event for people to socialize and have fun.

"There aren't too many opportunities for people to dress up in civilian attire and enjoy themselves," said the airman from Jacksonville, Fla. "I had the idea for a social gathering that would provide a relaxed, formal and fun environment for everyone - from under-age dormitory residents to chief master sergeants. Our hope is to bring together enlisted Airman from across the base to socialize and foster camaraderie."

Dress for the affair is dinner casual attire, and the affair features music, dancing, games and door prizes. There will also be a competition for best dressed male, female and couple. The guest speaker for the evening is Chief Master Sgt. Tim Rogers, 71st Security Forces Squadron superintendent.

Vance Airmen are stepping up and doing great things for the base, said 71st Flying Training Wing Command Chief Master Sgt. Ruben Gonzalez.

"Our Airmen have taken the lead on putting together on an event to enhance Vance's enlisted corps. It will be a great opportunity to get to know other Airmen on base along with having the opportunity to hear some motivating words from Chief Master Sgt. Tim Rogers."

Planning is ongoing and fund raising is an important part of the event's success. So far, committee members raised more than $800 and continue their efforts.

The committee hosts a car wash from 11 a.m. - 3 p.m., April 19; and 1 - 5 p.m., April 20 in the Wal-Mart parking lot.

People can join the committee to help plan the event and fund raisers from 1:30 - 2:30 p.m., Wednesdays in Bldg. 500, Room 107.

"All Team Vance members are welcome to attend," Airman Lawton said.
