Changes in command bittersweet Published March 7, 2007 By 2nd Lt. Agneta Murnan 71st Flying Training Wing Public Affairs VANCE AIR FORCE BASE, Okla. -- The former director of operations for the 71st Logistics Readiness Squadron, Capt. Sean Papworth became the new 71st Logistics Readiness Squadron commander in a relinquishment of command ceremony March 2. Captain Papworth accepted command of the squadron from Lt. Col. Daryl Cunningham, who will deploy to Middle East. Upon Colonel Cunningham's return, he will become the new 71st Mission Support Group deputy commander. Col. Chris Thelen, 71st Mission Support Group commander, said that "the relinquishment of Colonel Cunningham's command is bittersweet; he is truly a beloved commander. The change will be great for the Air Force, but difficult for the unit. It is tempered a bit by the fact that he will be returning in six months," to become the 71st Mission Support Group deputy commander. Colonel Thelen noted a number of Colonel Cunningham's accomplishments, including coming in at a difficult time, bringing the unit through an Operational Readiness Inspection and moving the unit forward to "build the reputation of the LRS as top of the line." Colonel Cunningham received a meritorious service medal for his diligent work. The former LRS commander thanked the squadron for a lengthy list of services they provided the 71st Flying Training Wing and asked Captain Papworth to "enjoy your time as a commander." With the change of leadership came a change in organizational structure as well. The Services Flight is now assigned under the 71st Mission Support Squadron. "The location of the Services Flight, Bldg. 200, is not changing," said Captain Papworth "It should be a seamless transition. I have confidence in the abilities of those in the squadron."
