Volunteers are needed now to help keep the Vance Officers Spouses Club Thrift Shop open.
Support of the non-profit venture is waning, which could mean the end of scholarships for high school seniors and free items for junior Airmen.
All money raised through thrift shop sales is sent to the OSC Welfare fund, said Pamela Moyer, thrift shop chairman. In 2004, the shop gave more than $4,000 to the fund.
"Through this fund, we are able to give scholarships to deserving high school seniors connected to Vance Air Force Base and to other military and civilian charities such as the Salvation Army, the YMCA, the Fisher House and the Military Child Education Coalition," Ms. Moyer said.
The thrift shop also supports the first sergeants' Airman Assistance Fund.
"E-1s through E-4s can use vouchers at the store to receive two bags full of merchandise for free," said Master Sgt. Chris Goff, 71st Operations Group acting first sergeant. The shirts then pay for the items through the Airman Assistance Fund, he said.
"We are in desperate need of volunteers to keep this vital function operating," Ms. Moyer said. "Volunteers get great benefits in a fun and friendly atmosphere. Just come see us."
The thrift shop is open from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesdays and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursdays. The shop is in Bldg. 606, across the street from the post office.
Vance can further support the store by donating or consigning items or by shopping, Ms. Moyer said. People consigning their items receive 75 percent of the sale.
"I've been here a year and have just discovered the shop," said Elizabeth Chambers, thrift shop patron. "It's such a hidden treasure. I can't believe they have so many good-quality items at a great discount."
Any help is appreciated, Ms. Moyer said. For more information, call 7731 or stop by during operating hours.
