As Team Vance members look for ways to vary physical fitness routines or beat rising gasoline prices, updated guidance restricts some options.
Vance Air Force Base Instruction 31-204, Air Force Motor Vehicle Traffic Supervision, limits where and how non-motorized transportation can be used.
"We want to ensure Team Vance members remain safe as they exercise or go to work, no matter how they choose to do so," said Capt. Tim O'Bryan, 71st Security Forces Squadron operations officer.
The regulation applies to bicyclists, roller skaters, rollerbladers and skateboarders. While bicycles can be ridden on the road with the flow of vehicle traffic, roller skates, rollerblades and skateboards cannot.
"However, skates, blades and boards can be ridden on the sidewalk, but we encourage base residents to use the base park as much as possible for a safer enjoyment of any wheeled sport," Captain O'Bryan said.
Airman 1st Class Amber Wood, 71st Logistics Readiness Squadron civil engineer readiness, uses rollerblades for exercise and transportation.
"I rollerblade around the base as a pacer for someone in marathon training," she said. "This has been excellent exercise for us both. My 5-year-old and I also rollerblade to the base park, pool and shoppette on the weekends. We just have to keep our paths on the sidewalks."
