71 MDOS, 8 FTS receive new leaders Published Dec. 1, 2006 By Public Affairs Public Affairs Vance Air Force Base, Okla. -- Change is in the wind at Vance Air Force Base, as several change of commands take place giving Team Vance new leaders. The former chief of medical logistics, facilities and systems at Headquarters, Air Force Space Command became the new 71st Medical Support Squadron commander Monday in a change of command ceremony held at the Vance Club. As the commander of the 71st MDSS, Lt. Col. Jeffery Jones is responsible for ensuring the unit provides administrative and managerial support to the staff and medical providers of the 71st Medical Group and supports approximately 4,300 people involved with undergraduate pilot training at Vance AFB.His awards include the Air Force Meritorious Service Medal with two oak leaf clusters, Air Force Commendation Medal, Air Force Achievement Medal and an Army Achievement Medal. Colonel Jones replaced Lt. Col. Jon Welch who will become the 509th Medical Support Squadron commander at Whiteman Air Force Base, Mo. The 8th Flying Training Squadron welcomed Lt. Col. Terrance McCaffrey III as their new commander during a change of command ceremony Tuesday in Hangar 170. Colonel McCaffrey arrived at Vance AFB in February as the T-6 initial cadre and transition lead. The 8th FTS is responsible for taking new pilot candidates for the Air Force, Navy and Marine Corps and transforming them into military aviators. Colonel McCaffrey is a command pilot with more than 2,100 hours in the T-37, T-38, F-111A/E, AT-38B, F-15C/D and the T-6A and served as chief of policy and strategy branch at Headquarters, North American Air Defense Command where he developed Homeland Air Defense policy and strategy following the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks. His awards include the Distinguished Flying Cross with "V" device, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal, Aerial Achievement Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Southwest Asia Service Medal and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal. Former 8th FTS commander, Navy Cmdr. Brian Osborn, will become a Naval Academy instructor in Annapolis, Md.
