One member of Joint Specialized Undergraduate Pilot Training Class 05-07 graduating today is already making history.
Second Lt. John Scott is the first Vance Air Force Base graduate to be selected as a first assignment instructor pilot for the 71st Flying Training Wing's newest training platform, the T-6A Texan II.
"It's awesome being the first T-6 FAIP at Vance," Lieutenant Scott said. "I'm looking forward to learning its capabilities and excited about training students who have never flown."
FAIP duty was one of the top preferences for the 2003 Ohio State University graduate who received his commission through the Reserve Officer Training Corps program.
"Seeing the progression of students will be a rewarding experience. Being a recent graduate I can also relate easily to the student viewpoint," the Ashville, Ohio, native said. "With the challenges a new aircraft presents, I will have a learning curve as much as the students."
He will have no trouble meeting those challenges according to one of his instructors.
Lieutenant Scott was the first student assigned to Maj. Bill Riddle, 71st Flying Training Wing executive officer, when he started instructor pilot duty here and was responsible for his training.
"Lieutenant Scott's flying aptitude is well above average and he will do well in this command and any follow-on commands," Major Riddle said. "He exemplifies the core values of officership and represents what we want officers to be."
The lieutenant is also looking forward to staying in this area with his wife Tara, who teaches in the Enid school system.
