When the child development and youth center hours began impacting mission requirements, the Non-Appropriated Funds council reviewed the situation.
As of Monday, the centers now open 15 minutes earlier at 6:45 a.m. and close 15 minutes earlier at 5:45 p.m.
The NAF council is in charge of making financial decisions for Team Vance's NAF activities, which includes services and therefore the centers. The council had received some suggestions to change the contract for the centers' hours.
Most units perform their Air Force-mandatory physical training in the morning, and Airmen needed to be able to make it to training on time, said Maj. Daryl Cunningham, 71st Logistics Readiness Squadron commander.
"Rather than change the contract, which would cost the Air Force money, we came up with the no-cost idea of simply shifting the hours back 15 minutes," he said. "There was a test period (when?), the results were reviewed by the council and the council voted to approve the change."
People sometimes perceive the child development and youth centers as unmovable organizations, said Roger Miller, youth programs branch manager.
"There are Vance and Air Force regulations we have to uphold, but there are some things we can do, like change our hours, to help the mission," he said. "It's a very small but positive change, and we're happy to help Team Vance."
Although the change has only been in effect for a few days, the new hours have been well received.
"The new hours are great. Before the new open time, I would always be late to my squadron PT," said Staff Sgt. Michelle Gamble, 71st Logistics Readiness Squadron. "I would be at the CDC at 7 a.m., then the youth center and get to PT 10 to 15 minutes late. Now, I am there on time with the squadron for calisthenics."
