A 71st Force Support Squadron force management journeyman is the 71st Flying Training Wing Airman of the Month for May.

Airman 1st Class James Atwell was selected by 71st FTW group superintendents for his work performance and merit as an Airman.

Atwell was plugging away on paperwork at his desk when Col. John Menozzi, the 71st FTW vice commander, walked into the military personnel flight's office accompanied by, Col. Christopher Daniels, the 71st Mission Support Group commander, and Chief Master Sgt. Peter Speen, the 71st FTW command chief.

"I called the room to attention and assumed they were there to make an announcement," said Atwell.

To his disbelief, Atwell's selection as the Airman of the Month was the announcement.

"I was really surprised," said Atwell, a Phoenix native. "I had no idea I was even in the running."

Those chosen as Airmen of the Month spend a day shadowing Speen. Their days will start with physical training and end with a pilot graduation dinner.

"I'm really looking forward to seeing how choices are made at a higher level," said Atwell. "It's my goal in life to reach my fullest potential professionally and personally. I'm lucky to have this opportunity, and it's really thanks to my leadership."

As a military personnelist, Atwell ensures Airmen's records are in order.

"I love my job because it puts me in a position to directly help a lot of people," said Atwell. "We take care of all aspects of personnel records, which have a major impact on careers."

Atwell's desire to be a top performer is reflected in his supervisor's assessment.

"He has a positive attitude and willingness to learn," said Tech. Sgt. Jennifer DiBello, the 71st FSS NCO in-charge of force management. "He does amazing work and trains his peers. His heart is as big as his desire to lead. I'm sure he'll be a chief master sergeant someday."
