Disaster Mental Health team can help before, after traumatic events Published Oct. 30, 2014 By Mental Health Element VANCE AIR FORCE BASE, Okla. -- The 71st Flying Training Wing Disaster Mental Health team, formerly known as Traumatic Stress Response Team, is a group of agencies dedicated to helping the base, which include the Mental Health Element, the Chapel, and the Airman and Family Readiness Center that respond after a traumatic event. The DMH members consult with base commanders on appropriate responses to a variety of traumatic events, which could range from someone learning of a loved one's death to a possible mass-casualty scenario. DMH members are also available to help people prepare for a potentially traumatic event by providing pre-exposure preparation training. PEP training may help cushion the blow of a traumatic event, along with building stronger resiliency within the community. Psychological first aid is the primary approach of a DMH response. This includes assessing the immediate needs of the victim and connecting them with the most helpful resources available. DMH team members are also available to provide brief counseling and education to victims which will not be recorded. The current 71st FTW/DMH team chiefs are Maj. Sam Tobler and Capt. Paul Williamson at the 71st Medical Group, Medical Services Flight, Mental Health Element. Unit commanders may call 213-7419 or consultation after a traumatic event.
