"If you don't like the weather, just wait five minutes," is a popular reference amongst Oklahomans referring to the diverse an unpredictable weather patterns they experience.

In acknowledgment of the unpredictable weather that exists not only in Oklahoma, but around the U.S., September is recognized as National Preparedness Month, an annual campaign led by the Federal Emergency Management Agency that encourages Americans to take steps to prepare for emergencies in their homes, workplaces and communities.

Every year, thousands of Americans feel the impact of tornadoes, blizzards, thunderstorms and the occasional earthquake. In 2012, more than 450 weather-related fatalities were reported along with nearly 2,600 injuries.

Members of the 71st Civil Engineer Squadron Emergency Preparedness Flight are spreading awareness to Team Vance through strategic placement of informative signs around base.

"We are placing signs with information about around base in high-traffic area to spread the word the importance of being ready," said Senior Airman Josh Daggett, a 71st Logistics Readiness Squadron emergency management journeyman. "It's not just about this month. It's something people should be doing year-round."

Throughout the month, members should keep their eyes peeled for stories on www.vance.af.mil on how to prepare for different types of natural disasters.
