Eight Team Vance members graduated a My Body My Life instructor class April 30.

The new instructors are certified to teach My Body My Life, a women's empowerment program that takes a proactive approach to teach women awareness, risk reduction and violence prevention techniques for issues associated with violence against women.

The new instructors earned their certification by mastering the curriculum and demonstrating their ability to teach a class themselves.

"I liked the balance between threat reduction and actual defensive actions women can take," said Capt. Trevor Sleight, one of the newest My Body My Life instructors. "The My Body My Life method is actually pretty similar to how we approach threat reduction in a military setting."

These new instructors will hold classes on a monthly basis for women from middle school through adulthood.

Modules cover topics like self-esteem, relationships and date rape. Additionally, the class includes several tactics that are simple, easy to remember ways to create space between victims and their attackers.

Robert Moore is the author and primary developer of My Body My Life. The motivation for creating the course was his three daughters. He wanted them to have the ability to protect their bodies and their lives to the best of their ability.

For class dates, monitor the base-wide email as the schedule is still in the works.
